SES Science Students Debut at State Envirothon Competition

Monica Jennings
Last week Saint Edward’s juniors and seniors competed at the State Envirothon Competition for the first time.  The event was held at the Beau Turner Youth Conservation Center near Monticello, FL.
To participate in the State Envirothon five teams competed in the Indian River Lagoon Envirothon earlier this spring. The regional event included scholastic teams from Brevard, Martin, St. Lucie, Okeechobee and Indian River Counties.  One Saint Edward’s team took first place in the Current Event Category, and another team, named Pumpkin Seeds won both the county and event overall with the highest total score.

Dr. Kerryanne Monaghan is looking forward to building on these recent successes as student participation and interest grow.  She says, “Next year I expect to enter another five teams, maybe even more.  The Envirothon Competition ties in quite nicely with our emphasis on marine and environmental science that we continue to weave throughout grade bands beginning in 4th grade across science disciplines.”  To increase Saint Edward’s competitive edge, Dr. Monaghan is hoping to bring in experts on forestry, soil and aquatics to help teach our students.

This year’s team took 3rd place honors in the Aquatics Division.  The team consisted of Daniel Jutras (’15), Griffin Fairchok (’15), Peyton Klein (’15), Ellie Peterson (’14) and Zunera Naeem (’15).  Congratulations!
