Model UN Visits Montreal and Palm Beach

Monica Jennings
Model UN Teammembers traveled to Montreal for the first competition of the year, hosted by McGill University. Just one day after their return, a smaller delegation traveled to Palm Beach to learn the importance of learning from our past to secure a peaceful political and cultural future.
The group of 23 students departed for Montreal on Thursday, November 6. They participated in three days of debate and were also able to enjoy the city's unique cuisine and culture. Delegates participated in both present-day and historical debates ranging from measures to control the spread of disease to strategies for maintaining order in the Mughal Empire.

Delegate Sana Shareef earned a top award for her diplomatic skill and tireless effort. Anirudh Mysore earned a book award for enthusiasm as a member of the United Nations General Assembly. ?Delegates returned home during the early morning of the 10th excited about their international excursion and looking forward to other opportunities. One such opportunity came less than 36 hours later.

A group of seven students traveled to the luxurious Eau Palm Beach hotel and listened to Professor Dr. Robert Watson give a speech entitled "America's First Crisis: 200 years later," sponsored by the World Affairs Council of the Palm Beaches. In his highly informative and engaging talk, Dr. Watson discussed the antecedents to the War of 1812 and the importance of this particular war in shaping the course of American history. He emphasized that the War of 1812 was the first and most pressing national crisis, and that the events that led to and ended the War can give us valuable insight into the current issues that plague our nation and the world and help us find solutions.

Delegates are looking forward to the trips to Chicago and Ireland that the club will embark upon in February and March, respectively, as well as the continued opportunities at the World Affairs Council of the Palm Beaches.

Special thanks to sophomore Keyshore Chundi for this submission.
