Teaching Through Harkness in Middle School

To build background knowledge before reading Red Scarf Girl, Ms. Durand's 7th-grade students perused an article about the Cultural Revolution in China and followed up with a Harkness Discussion. The most challenging skills were the ability to reference the ideas of others and build upon those ideas to move the conversation forward. A student question that generated deep thought was Why did Mao target young people with his propaganda?
