Seventh Grade English Students Probe the Cultural Revolution
(lk)
To build their background knowledge prior to reading Red Scarf Girl, seventh grade English students went on a gallery walk, visiting various posters and photos illustrating the Cultural Revolution in China. Students studied the pictures in silence, recording what they observed and any questions they had. After the silent "I notice, I wonder" session, they discussed their thoughts as a class. They also studied an article outlining the events which took place and participated in a Harkness discussion. Finally, after viewing a documentary about this tumultuous period in Chinese history, the seventh graders were ready to immerse themselves in Red Scarf Girl.
