2023 High School Scholar-Athlete Award Winners Announced

On Monday, April 17, at the Sunrise Theater in Fort Pierce, seniors Eli Barin and Luna Rivera were recognized as outstanding high school scholar-athletes at a banquet sponsored by the Play Treasure Coast Sports Commission. The evening, which featured former Major League baseball player Rick Ankiel as the keynote speaker, recognized students from all of the schools throughout the Treasure Coast. Both Barin and Rivera have clearly excelled in the classroom and on the field.

Eli Barin has been a member and leader of the golf, basketball, and lacrosse teams throughout his four years at Saint Edward's. In golf, his senior year, he finished the season with a scoring average of 41.3 which led the team by over 3 strokes. This past season, Barin also helped to lead the boys' basketball team to the Class 2A District 13 title. As a co-captain on the lacrosse team, he helped lead the team to the State Championship game his sophomore year and the regional semi-final his junior year--a season in which he scored 26 goals and won nearly 60% of the face-offs.

For the past three seasons, Luna Rivera has emerged as the leader and co-captain of the Lady Pirate Cross Country and Track & Field teams. She led the girls' cross-country team to two state championship appearances in the past three seasons and to a team victory in the Sunshine State Athletic Conference Championship in her senior year. Rivera was instrumental in starting a Track & Field team at Saint Edward's in her junior year. That season, she qualified for the Class 1A Regional meet in the 3200m and as a member of the 4X800 relay team. Her leadership has been instrumental to the success of these programs at Saint Edward's.
