Welcome from Head of School
Spring 2023
To the Class of 2023:
You are a small but mighty group that did a remarkable job of leading our School this past year. You have made Saint Edward’s a better place, and we are forever grateful.
My first piece of advice is to live your life to the fullest and do it the right way, by making the lives of others better. We all have an unbelievable opportunity, each day, to spend our days making a positive impact on our world.
My second piece of advice has to do with regrets. What I regret most in my life are failures of kindness.
My third piece of advice: stop worrying about what others think of you. While you are worrying about what others are thinking of you, they are worrying about what others are thinking of them.
Four: A person who is nice to you, but is mean to the waiter, is not a nice person.
Five: Stay true to yourself and your beliefs. Never sway.
Six: Don’t worry about your first job out of college; it is the experience you will gain from that job that will help you. Of course, if it is something cool like becoming a spy, a movie star, or a host of Saturday Night Live, you will definitely be the center of attention at your 30th Saint Edward’s reunion!
Seven: Handwritten thank you notes are greater than emails. The current communication methods are efficient and effective, but old-school ones show that you care enough to do a little extra.
Eight: To get plugged in, unplug. Maximize your connections through all of your social media platforms and digital tools, but for meaningful contacts, put down the phone. Look folks in the eye. Make them feel like they are the most important person in the room.
Nine: Choose an email address you can share with professional contacts. FirstName.LastName@gmail.com is a much better choice than LikeABoss44@gmail.com.
Ten: Get in the habit of being early for class, work or meetings. Never underestimate the importance of being punctual.
Eleven: Write down your goals! Review them periodically. Adjust them, when necessary.
And finally, twelve: After Mimi and I have put four kids through college, we can say this without reservation: Pizza is not an emergency. Respect your budget.
Congratulations, Class of 2023. I am so very proud of you.
