The Crayon Box that Talked

Marie Mahovetz (lk)
LS/MS Counselor Ms. Mahovetz joined the second-grade classrooms for a lesson on accepting differences. Students participated in the creation of a picture using only blue crayons until they noticed that without all of the colors in the crayon box, the picture was "boring," "plain" and "flat." The classes explored the idea of everyone having the same hair, the same glasses, or everyone being from the same place; all prompts resulting in sighs and gasps of disbelief at the possibility of a world like that. Following a reading of the book titled,The Crayon Box that Talked by Shane Derolf, the students discussed how each color in the box has a purpose. Below are some of the masterpieces drawn by groups of second graders using only one color per student so that all colors had important roles in their images. This message of celebrating one another and our contributions to the Saint Edward's School community will continue to be shared over the school year through lessons such as this one.
