Counselor Corner - Navigating Back to School Anxiety

Marie Mahovetz (lk)
Greetings from Ms. M, your Lower & Middle School Counselor! This year, you will see a Counselor Corner feature included in the View From the Middle published by Mrs. Murphy on a weekly basis. My hope is to offer insight and guidance about a variety of topics for not only the student body but for their families as well. More information, resources and tools are included in the 'MS Counseling' bulletin board listed under the Advisory section of all Pre-K through 8th-grade student profiles on MySTEDS. Today's feature is for families as a whole.
The anxiety and uncertainty of a new school year is upon us. We are living in a time that things can change in a matter of days and students are coming to/logging into a different kind of school day filled with masks, social distancing, muting their mic, and virtual classmates. Combine these feelings with any events happening within your homes and that leaves a large amount of pressure for the whole family. While there are many tools out there for adults and children to manage this anxiety, I have included the method for STOP here. I am hopeful that this 4-step STOP plan will help your families learn to navigate the many feelings coming from our new normal. (It’s also helping me work through my own!) While our school year is going to look different, one thing we can be grateful for is more time to communicate in a meaningful way with our kids. We can take some time to STOP.
