From the School Chaplain: The Season of Epiphany

(lk)
The Feast Day of the Epiphany took place on Wednesday the 6th of January. This is a day in the church calendar that remembers the Bible story in the Gospel of Matthew 2:1-12 when the three Wise Men or Magi traveled from the East to Jerusalem and then to Bethlehem to find and pay homage to the Christ child.  The story tells us that the three sages, thought to be astrologers, followed a star that led them to the baby Jesus, where they worshipped him and placed their gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh before him. The word epiphany is from the Greek meaning to reveal.  It is the Christian belief that this story was revealing to the Gentiles (non-Jewish people) that Jesus was divine and not just human. It is helpful to remember the way the word epiphany is used in English classes to describe an event in a story that suddenly reveals a truth or insight. Epiphany takes place twelve days after Christmas.  The twelve days take into account the time it took the Wise Men to reach Bethlehem. The season of Epiphany leads up to Ash Wednesday, which leads into the season of Lent. - Father John Barrett
