Varsity Girls Basketball Captures D5 Alive Tournament Trophy

The varsity girls basketball team recently competed in the D5 Alive Tournament being held in the Gonzalez Lobo-Activities Center. On 1/27/23, the Lady Pirates faced Jupiter Christian School for the semifinal round. With a fantastic start, the Lady Pirates took a 16-1 lead in the 1st quarter against the Lady Eagles. The thrilling competition on the court saw the Lady Pirates tie the Lady Eagles  38-38 by the end of the 4th quarter. Stepping up their efforts in overtime, the Lady Pirates held the Lady Eagles to 3 points. Down by 1 point with a few seconds left, Taylor Wolfe blocked a pass right to Gaby Collazo. Collazo then passed the ball to teammate Chase Nelson, who dropped the game-winning shot with 2.5 seconds left.

Leading on the scoreboard for the Lady Pirates was Dhanika Perez with 17, followed by Wolfe with 9. Adterria Holloway netted 6 points for the Lady Pirates, and both Aiala Ruiz de Arbulo Sagasti and Nelson recorded 4 apiece. Collazo tallied 2 points toward the overtime victory.

The championship game on 1/28/23 saw the Lady Pirates take on Marco Island Academy in another close match-up. Despite being down 7 going into the half, the Lady Pirates rallied to defeat the Lady Eagles 45-42 and secure their D5 Alive Tournament victory. Both Perez and Nelson made the D5 Alive All-Tournament Team.

Scoring 10 points each and leading the Lady Pirates on the court were Ruiz de Arbulo Sagasti and Collazo. Following closely with 9 points apiece were Wolfe and Nelson. Also putting up points for the Lady Pirates were Sommer Soderman with 4 and Perez with 3.

 
Next game is the Class 2A District 13 Semifinals against Morningside Academy, starting at 5:30 PM at Merritt Island Christian School in Merritt Island.
