Pirates Saving the Lagoon

MB (lk)
Ms. Buckley's Marine Biology Honors and Dr. Monahan's Biology-2 Honors classes had the opportunity to help create oyster cages last week with scientists from the Ocean Research and Conversation Association (ORCA) based in Fort Pierce. The pilot phase of this project will deploy these oyster cages with approximately 30 adult oysters in each off private docks in The Moorings Yacht & Country Club this summer. The test phase is to determine the best locations and depths to place the cages to get a good snapshot of the concentration of toxins in the Indian River Lagoon. The oysters will be used a sentinel species, since they are filter feeders, and any chemicals or toxins they filter can be incorporated into their tissues and provide scientists with a glimpse of what is going on in the water column. Thank you to all the students, scientists and visitors from The Moorings!
