Habitat Study to Determine Suitability for Endemic Osceola Turkeys

Ecology Honors students hiked the Saint Sebastian River Preserve State Park to measure and identify vegetation in the mesic flatwoods. Their objective was to determine if this area provides the diverse habitat requirements to be suitable for turkey poults and nesting females. Students learned how to use a Nudds board to measure horizontal and vertical coverage essential for turkey survival. The experience allowed them to be immersed for a day in our natural areas to gain a deeper understanding of wildlife ecology.
