Pirate Parent Shares Painful History

MJ
This week, Mrs. George's freshman classes welcomed Pirate mom and board member Ashley Shackelton to honors English classes as they begin their book study of Elie Wiesel's Night. Mrs. Shackelton's grandmother was a Holocaust survivor, and her story is both immensely painful and powerfully triumphant. Because so many from that generation did not want to dwell on their experiences, their own children were not privy to the details of one of history's darkest eras, and Mrs. Shackelton shared that "my generation is the one who has to tell the stories" so the passage of time can't dilute the realities of what occurred. Thank you, Mrs. Shackelton, for sharing Mom Mom Helene's journey. Your compelling story set the stage for a novel lesson that our students will remember forever.
