Make Your Resolutions SMART

Marie Mahovetz (lk)
The beginning of a new year gives us a chance to make changes in our lives. They can be tiny or large changes, but what matters is that they are important to you. It is easy to say, "I'm going to get more sleep," or "I'm going to stop procrastinating on assignments," but does that really work? When creating a goal, there are a variety of questions you should ask yourself as they relate to specific parts of the acronym SMART:
  • Specific. What exactly do you want to do? Who else might be involved? Where will this take place? Why do I want to accomplish this?
  • Measurable. How will you know if you've reached your goal?
  • Attainable. Do I have the resources I need to make this happen? Is this possible?
  • Relevant. Why is this goal important to you? Can I commit to this goal?
  • Time-bound. When is the deadline? When exactly do you want your goal to be met?
