Every Monday morning, the Leadership Team at Saint Edward’s has its weekly meeting. We cover a number of topics, including policies, issues or concerns that need to be addressed, upcoming calendar events, etc. We also spend time putting together the school calendar for the coming academic year, awarding summer stipends for professional development to faculty who have applied and a host of other things that require attention to run a school the size and complexity of Saint Edward’s.
What often goes unseen, however, is how much of our conversation is centered on people rather than processes. We talk about how our students are doing, what support they might need and how to best create an environment where they can thrive both academically and personally. We discuss faculty successes and challenges, always with an eye toward encouraging professional growth and maintaining the high standard of teaching and learning that defines our School. Our meetings, while certainly focused on operations, are equally about relationships and ensuring that the mission of Saint Edward’s is lived out every day in classrooms, on playing fields, on stage and in countless other interactions.
Another important element of these gatherings is collaboration. Each member of the Leadership Team brings a unique perspective and area of expertise, and the dialogue is richer because of their different backgrounds. By working together, we are able to anticipate challenges, generate creative solutions, and make thoughtful decisions that reflect the values of the school community. This collaborative spirit is essential not only to the success of our meetings but to the overall health of the institution.
Ultimately, these Monday mornings are about stewardship, caring for the resources, people and traditions of Saint Edward’s while also looking ahead to the opportunities and challenges of the future. While the work is detailed and sometimes complex, it is deeply rewarding, because at the heart of it all is a shared commitment to giving our students the very best education and experience possible.
I would also add that this team is by far the most talented group that I have had the pleasure of working with. We are devoid of egos, and we all care deeply about this place and each other.
