MUN in Montréal
The arctic blast collided with the Saint Edward’s Model UN team in Montréal, Canada. Mr. Mitchell, Mme. Durand and Sra. Heard accompanied 25 students to the 2019 session of the Secondary School Simulation of the United Nations (SSUNS) in Montréal, Canada. The Saint Edward’s students showcased their talents in different committees where they discussed global issues with 1100 other students from around the U.S. and abroad. Topics that students addressed included the Syrian refugee crisis, space junk, the Lebanon hostage crisis and the role of women in the face of natural disasters such as in Haiti.

Students are expected to conduct themselves as apprentice diplomats during this conference. They debated solutions to a variety of topical, real time global issues, and worked to establish cordial diplomatic relationships between the countries they represented and the world at large.In their limited free time, students visited key sites in French-speaking Montréal and Québec City, and learned a few important French phrases including “Je voudrais un chocolat chaud au Nutella”. Eighth-grader Emmy Dichter commented, “I met so many new people, and there were people from all around the world. It taught me a lot about patience and teamwork.” For many Upper School students, this annual conference has become a tradition and the time spent in Québec has generated many wonderful memories. Collectively, I think the 25 members of the MUN program would agree with the motto of Québec: Je me souviens! (I remember)
