Red Scarf Girl Through the Eyes of First Hand Experience

Betsy Wengler
Seventh-grade students, who are reading Red Scarf Girl by Ji-li Jiang, heard about China's Cultural Revolution from someone who lived through it, Dr. Bao. Dr. Bao shared her experience living in China under Chairman Mao's reign and helped the students make a real-world connection between the novel and a respected faculty member. Dr. Bao's family members were respected doctors during the Cultural Revolution, and she stressed the importance of education during her visit.
