Varsity Girls Basketball Faces MCC in Heartbreaker
The varsity girls basketball team opened their regular season on the road, traveling to Melbourne on 11/28/23 to take on Melbourne Central Catholic High School. Despite being down at the start of the game, the Pirates rallied to take the lead at halftime 16-14. Both teams fought for control of the court, with the Pirates being down 22-23 to the Hustlers at the end of the 3rd quarter. Gaby Collazo made 5 out of 6 free throws to pull the Lady Pirates within 1 point. Despite their best efforts though, the Pirates ultimately fell to the Hustlers 30-33.
Chase Nelson led the Pirates on the floor with 12 points, 7 rebounds, 4 steals, and 1 block, and teammate Collazo recorded 10 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals, and 1 block on the night. Sommer Soderman put up 4 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals, and 1 block for the Pirate team. Avonti Jennings led the team in rebounds with 13 and accumulated 2 points, 1 assist, and 3 steals. Shaniya Bryant added 2 points, 6 rebounds, and 1 assist, and teammate Caitlin Moscrip contributed 1 rebound.
Next game is away on 11/30/23 at Port St. Lucie High School in Port St. Lucie, starting at 5:00 PM.
