Sun, Flashlights, and Fun: First Graders Explore Light & Shadows
First-grade students explored the fascinating properties of light through hands-on investigations. As part of their studies, they discovered how different objects affect shadows. Students learned that opaque objects create dark shadows, translucent objects cast medium shadows and transparent objects produce light shadows. In addition, they explored how the position of the sun influences the size and shape of shadows, while having a great time creating and observing shadows on the playground! After reading Bear Shadow, students used flashlights and wooden bear figures to model how the sun's location impacts shadows.
