Alligator Ecology Lab
Ecology honors students explored the internal and external anatomy of an American alligator, Alligator mississippiensis, with Mrs. Nelson. Alligators are keystone species in wetland ecosystems, and students are studying their role as ecological engineers and apex predators within the Florida Everglades. Students are also investigating their function as important bioindicators of environmental toxicology. Alligators accumulate significant pollutants and directly reflect ecosystem health, serving as early warning signs of risks to human populations sharing the same environment.
