According To What? Studio 9-12 makes Clay Coil Vessels with Contemporary Twists

Contemporary Artist Ai Weiwei is changing the way the world thinks about the function of art. As a Chinese expatriate, Ai has tackled issues all over the world. From speaking out about disastrous government policies that lead to the deaths of children, to resisting wrongful arrest, to questioning the value of important monuments and artifacts, Ai is as outspoken as he is humanitarian. His heartbreaking film “Human Flow” follows the stories of those who have been made refugees by poverty and war.

One of his most famous art pieces is a Neolithic vase onto which he has painted a Coca-Cola logo in bright, silver paint. This move represents a larger questioning of unique objects and how the artifacts of ancient times can be made new or changed by our current societies.

The 9th-12th studio played with these ideas by creating clay vessels and adding a contemporary twist. The twist might be a logo, a sculpture, or a glazed addition. We hope you enjoy the results.
