Sixth Graders See The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical

Katie Newman
Sixth graders recently extended their learning beyond the classroom with a field trip to The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical. This experience emphasized the power of seeing literature performed. While students were already familiar with the novel from English class, the live production made the story more exciting, memorable and meaningful, allowing them to analyze how performance choices enhance plot, characters and themes in ways that differ from the text. At the same time, students made connections to their sixth-grade history curriculum by identifying mythological figures and archetypes from ancient Greece and examining how Greek beliefs about gods, fate and heroism shaped civic life and moral codes, ultimately recognizing the lasting influence of Greek culture on modern storytelling and the performing arts.
