Running with the Pack in Fourth Grade

Carly McAuliffe
Fourth graders gathered in a “wolf pack” circle to discuss themes of survival, resilience and independence in A Wolf Called Wander. Through thoughtful conversation, students explored what it means to rely on instinct—and on one another. Over the past several weeks, they have traced Wander’s journey, analyzed how he grows and changes and reflected on how setting shapes character. Students supported their ideas with evidence from the text, asked meaningful questions and built on one another’s thinking as they considered the challenges Wander faces in the wild. Our novel study has encouraged readers to think deeply about perseverance, courage and the power of community — both in the wilderness and in our own lives.
