Voices, Perspectives and Critical Thinking in Fifth Grade

Carly McAuliffe
Fifth-grade students have been engaging in thoughtful “Agree/Disagree” discussions as part of their library learning. Students begin by activating prior knowledge on a topic and then respond to a posted statement by moving to a space in the room that reflects their perspective—agree, disagree or unsure. They participate in respectful, student-led conversations, sharing their reasoning and listening to their peers' viewpoints. This interactive approach promotes critical thinking, strengthens speaking and listening skills and helps students learn to support their ideas with evidence. Students also reflect on their thinking through a follow-up Google Form, allowing them to articulate their ideas in writing and consider how their perspectives may evolve after discussion.
