In its earliest form, theatre arose from man's wish to communicate and express himself to others. At Saint Edward's, the Theatre Department strives to give each student the tools to enter the adult world as a creative and assertive individual. Initially, students are given the opportunity to rehearse and perform in class plays, gaining inner confidence and enjoying their own natural desires to create and communicate.
As students enter the middle divisions, they are encouraged to continue to nurture their personal creativity, while learning the basic structure of creative collaboration in theatrical performance and an appreciation for all aspects of the theatre and technical arts.
In the upper divisions, the Theatre Department nurtures a close, supportive ensemble environment that offers a balanced and structured study of scenic, costume, lighting, sound, and publicity design with an emphasis in script analysis and character development in performance. Students have the opportunity to explore the timeline of history in theatre arts in addition to working on and off stage in Theatre Arts and Conservatory classes as well as three fully-staged high school productions each year.
