Why Emotional Intelligence Matters: Dr. Hirstein Speaks with Entrepreneurship Honors

This week, Dr. Hirstein visited Mrs. Stalquist’s Entrepreneurship Honors class to share insights on the importance of Emotional Intelligence in professional and personal success. Drawing from his diverse career, spanning roles as a teacher, Army sergeant, investment banker, independent school CFO and now Head of School, he illustrated how understanding and connecting with others has been just as crucial as technical skill or intelligence.

Dr. Hirstein shared that his experiences caring for his platoon in the military, along with the mentors he met along the way, taught him the value of authenticity, empathy, communication and emotional awareness. The students engaged with thoughtful questions, exploring how emotional intelligence shows up in daily life, both in and outside of school, and how it can shape their future careers and guide their professional growth.

Senior Payton Andrews reflected on the visit, noting how applicable Dr. Hirstein’s advice felt. "I really enjoyed listening to Dr. Hirstein’s engaging talk about Emotional Intelligence," she said. "He shared some important tips we can use daily like reading the room and before you respond or react to people and situations to use the 24/48 hour rule."
