Investigating the Skeletal System: Hands and Feet

The next time you’re at the dinner table or driving in the car, ask your second grader if they know what their phalanges or metacarpals are! Our second graders turned into little scientists as they explored the amazing bones in their hands and feet. They traced their hands, added bright colors and labeled each bone, discovering how all those tiny parts work together to help them move, grab and hold. Next, they labeled the bones in their feet, noticing how hands and feet are similar—and how they’re different, too. This fun activity showed students that, even though their hands and feet may be small, those tiny bones team up in powerful ways!
