Re-Dedication of the Michael Trevino-Aversa Memorial Garden

On Friday, May 2, a group gathered after school to re-dedicate the Michael Trevino-Aversa Memorial Garden on our campus. The garden was originally established in memory of Michael, a beloved member of the Class of 2003 who passed away tragically soon after graduation.

Nearly two years ago, Linda Colontrelle, Michael’s aunt and longtime member of the Saint Edward’s community, began the effort to refurbish the garden as a way of honoring Michael and his surviving mother, Cindy. During the re-dedication ceremony, Father John Barrett, our school chaplain, offered prayers and reconsecrated the garden as a place of solace and reflection in God’s presence. It was a beautiful time for Michael’s family and friends to draw together and for Cindy to share a few words about the fine young man that he was. Heartfelt thanks to everyone who helped make the day possible, with special mention to Will Stribling and his campus crew, Melissa Buza and Robert and Tracy Williams.

Stages of Refurbishment

One stage of the effort took place on February 1, when a group of Scouts and students took down a bamboo curtain and installed two white vinyl panels as a border to the space. The work was part of an Eagle Scout project carried out by junior Matthew Barrett.

Another stage was accomplished by middle school science teacher Les Rogers, who constructed a cross and a plaque on which the words, “Be still and know that I am God,” were inscribed from Psalm 46:10. Both are affixed in the Garden as a reminder that we can come into God’s loving presence by quieting ourselves.
