Honoring Loved Ones: Ofrenda del Día de los Muertos

The Spanish Department, led by Mrs. Esthela Rojas, recently brought one of Mexico’s most meaningful and beautiful traditions to campus with their Ofrenda (Altar de Muertos), which was on display in the Peter B. Benedict Library.

Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a tradition that honors and celebrates the lives of those who have passed away. It recognizes death as a natural part of life, a time when the spirits of loved ones return to join in the festivities. Families commemorate the occasion with offerings of food, flowers, music and personal mementos that reflect the lives of those they remember. At the Ofrenda, visitors experienced a glimpse of this rich cultural celebration; the display offered a meaningful opportunity for reflection and connection, bringing the vibrant tradition of Día de los Muertos to life on campus.
