Doing art competitions like scholastic art and writing and Vero Beach Museum of Art, going on the New York trip and seeing the museum of modern art, and going on a model UN trip sophomore year to Montreal
What’s your “core memory” from SES?
One of my best core memories is when I was on a trip in New York City with the arts classes and we were walking around finding places to get food and then it just starts pouring rain and everybody on the trip had to hide under one umbrella.
Give a shoutout to your favorite class, teacher, mentor or coach!
I would like to give a shout out to Mrs Wengler specifically for my 7th grade English class that was one of my favorite classes ever and Mrs. Wengler is definitely my favorite teacher ever!
What’s something you accomplished at SES that your freshman-year self would be impressed by?
I was able to collect over 150 pairs of pajamas for kids in India
Drop some wisdom—what’s one piece of advice you’d give to an underclassman?
Some wisdom would definitely be to try to make the most of your high school years because it goes by super quickly (and try not to get dress coded)
Remembering everyone cheering us along during the Christmas parade as my brother sat as Santa and I walked next to the DIY pirate ship my parents and the school put together a week prior.
Give a shoutout to your favorite class, teacher, mentor or coach!
Mr. and Mrs. Baker 100% without these super supportive characters in my life I’d be no where near as progressed in life as I am. They sprouted my budding passion and allowed me to find a career in acting.
What’s something you accomplished at SES that your freshman-year self would be impressed by?
I earned a Critics choice at the district Thespian festival on a script we chose half as a joke. Or in 8th grade at the end of the year when me and friend somehow managed to let Father Barrett perform the Hokey Pokey infront of the middle and upper school and everyone joined in.
Drop some wisdom—what’s one piece of advice you’d give to an underclassman?
As far as grit will get you, as far as encouragement will get you, as far as perseverance will get you, none of these elements will get you as far as surrounding yourself with the right people for you. Those that build you up when you’re down, turn challenges into competitions, make hours feel like minutes, and make everyday worthwhile if you get to see their smiling faces. Those are the people you need to find and keep hold of. If you do this and listen to my advice, you’ll find your life naturally improving with minimal effect on your end.
My top three extracurriculars were Soccer, Football, and Jazz Band. Playing sports has always been a hobby of mine since I was in elementary school. But when I came to Saint Edward's I picked up band and it soon became one of my favorite activities.
What’s your “core memory” from SES?
One of my core memories from SES is the entirety of the 6th grade soccer season. We only played against JV teams, and our team consisted of 6th graders. So, we lost every game because we were a bunch of 13-year-olds playing against 16 and 17-year-olds. But, overall it was an enjoyable experience and it made us better players at the end of the day.
Give a shoutout to your favorite class, teacher, mentor or coach!
A teacher who has been very influential to me is Dr. Mohr. He has effectively guided me to applying and getting accepted to colleges. He has taken time out of his day and worked around my schedule to ensure I succeed.
What’s something you accomplished at SES that your freshman-year self would be impressed by?
My Freshman-year self would be impressed with me taking AP Classes. When I was a freshman I was very intimidated by the idea of taking an AP Class, now I am much more comfortable taking them.
Drop some wisdom—what’s one piece of advice you’d give to an underclassman?
Your grades in your freshman and sophomore years matter more than you think. Try to maintain a good GPA in those earlier years so you have a good foundation to build off of.
MY sports (Basketball, Tennis) and clubs like Model UN, Envirothon, and doing my hospital internship where I shadowed anesthesiologists for a week
What’s your “core memory” from SES?
Either my Humor Speech or playing 1v1 basketball on our senior class trip in the keys
Give a shoutout to your favorite class, teacher, mentor or coach!
Some classes I really appreciated were AP Bio, APUSH, AP Physics C- Mechanics, and AP Spanish Lang. I'd like to thank Dr. LP, Sra. Mejia, Mr. Tuna, Mrs. Buckley. For college counseling, Mrs. Wald was the best, and I thank her for her help and advice.
What’s something you accomplished at SES that your freshman-year self would be impressed by?
Maintaining that balance of everything I enjoy doing while continuing to be a good student as classes and life got busier.
Drop some wisdom—what’s one piece of advice you’d give to an underclassman?
I would say that there's no one way to go about building success in high school. Prioritize your goals but remember to always take breaks when needed to not burn out and have fun with the process. Even though there will be some crazy busy days, don't stress out and just know that it'll all work out in the end. Just put in the work when needed and you'll end up where you want to be in the future.
Having the opportunity to travel to Ireland for MUN with my friends and meet so many people, some that I still talk to today.
Give a shoutout to your favorite class, teacher, mentor or coach!
It's hard, but I'd have to say AP Biology was my favorite class as of now.
What’s something you accomplished at SES that your freshman-year self would be impressed by?
Volunteering to play piano at school events because I used to avoid playing around others.
Drop some wisdom—what’s one piece of advice you’d give to an underclassman?
Take advantage of all the opportunities to get involved! You won't regret participating in everything you can, and it will help you more than you could imagine once you start applying for colleges.
We are so grateful for our 2024-25 Corporate Partners and Family Patrons. Thank you to Josh Waldrop - DSRE for supporting Saint Edward's School! We appreciate all you do.
My core memory is during the varsity boys soccer regional game my sophomore or junior year getting hit in the face by the ball from the field.
Give a shoutout to your favorite class, teacher, mentor or coach!
Thank you, Mrs. Barnes, for always supporting and helping me, Mr. Rogers (math) for never being my teacher but still having to deal with me for 5 years on the basketball team, and Mrs. Nelson for being the best homeroom teacher.

Give a shoutout to your favorite class, teacher, mentor or coach!
I always enjoyed having english with Mrs. Barnes 10th and 11th! She made the learning environment peaceful and helpful. Her knowledge in her subject led me to be quite successful on exams that helped me get to where I am today.
What’s something you accomplished at SES that your freshman-year self would be impressed by?
In my junior year, I became one of the United Pirate Orientation leaders. I carried this on into my senior year. My freshman-year self would be very impressed that I took on this leadership role, putting myself out there to talk in the Waxlax in front of more than 70 people. As a freshman, I didn't really like public speaking, but after being the leader of this orientation, I am much more comfortable with it.
Drop some wisdom—what’s one piece of advice you’d give to an underclassman?
One piece of advice I would give to underclassman is that every year of high school counts whether thats academically, socially, or athletically. However, mainly academically. Many people think your junior and senior year are the only years in school that define your high school academic career, but freshman and sophomore year greatly impact you academically as you're getting ready to apply for colleges. So always try hard in every class no matter what grade you are in because it all adds up in the end.
Give a shoutout to your favorite class, teacher, mentor or coach!
I would have to thank Coach Hanford for taking me in on the lacrosse team junior year and truly being an outstanding role model to me not just in lacrosse but in every aspect of life in general, next I would have to thank Coach Greenfield for believing in my ability as an athlete, teaching me how to play defense in lacrosse, and really for the amount of time and investment he has put into the lacrosse program. Without these two coaches/leaders I don’t think my highschool experience would have been the same and I will always be grateful for them.
What’s something you accomplished at SES that your freshman-year self would be impressed by?
Getting into Auburn
Drop some wisdom—what’s one piece of advice you’d give to an underclassman?
Your grades matter especially your freshman year and it’s better to stay on top of them instead of having to dig your self out of a hole junior-senior year
We are so grateful for our 2024-25 Corporate Partners and Family Patrons. Thank you to Vero Beach Equestrian Club, for supporting Saint Edward's School! We appreciate all you do.
I'll never forget playing knock the pin dodgeball in PE in Lower School.

Thank you Mr. Hengen for fostering my love of music and helping it to grow even more. You always made be believe I could get better, and you made band class one of the highlights of my day. Also, thank you Mrs. Buckley for the best AP Bio class. You taught me so much, and I will never forget all the laughs I had in that class.
What’s something you accomplished at SES that your freshman-year self would be impressed by?
My freshman-year self would be so impressed with my research for science fair.
Drop some wisdom—what’s one piece of advice you’d give to an underclassman?
Take advantage of all the opportunities Saint Ed's has to offer, and don't be scared to try something new because you might end up loving it.
The feeling of playing my first football game back after being cleared my senior year. In first defensive play of the year, I made the tackle behind the line of scrimmage, and in that moment, all of my hard work in the past 10 months finally paid off.
Give a shoutout to your favorite class, teacher, mentor or coach!
I would like to shoutout my football Coach, Coach Schofield, for always challenging me and pushing me to be the person version of myself off the field and on it. Without his guidance and mentorship, I wouldn't be the person, or player, that I am today. I would also like to shoutout Mrs. Stalquist. She has been my homeroom teacher for the past 4 years and seen me grow and mature. She is caring, compassionate, and understanding, and I can always count on her to be in my corner when I need her. Thank you both for everything you've done for me over the years!
What’s something you accomplished at SES that your freshman-year self would be impressed by?
Playing football in college, and being elected Student Body President
Drop some wisdom—what’s one piece of advice you’d give to an underclassman?
Control the "controlables", some things in life are completely out of our hands, we can't waste time worrying about things we cant change. Things we can control are our attitude and mindset. My biggest piece of advice is to not stress over aspects of life you cant change, and only focus on what you can.
The Waxlax stage turned into a word wonderland yesterday as Mrs. Puttick's and Mrs. Binkley’s first graders put on a Vocabulary Showcase that was equal parts educational and adorable. Each student strutted their stuff dressed as a vocabulary word (think shimmering adjectives and expressive nouns), sharing definitions and sentences like pros.
Just when the crowd thought the show couldn’t get any more entertaining, their Senior Buddies made a surprise entrance. Cue the beat! "Ice Ice Baby" started to play, but with a twist. The students performed a hilarious and heartfelt remix, swapping “ice, ice, baby” for “vocabulary, baby” and dropping clever lyrics.
It was a perfect blend of learning and laughter, and the kind of moment that shows just how much fun school can be. Click here to rewatch the showcase, and click here for an album of highlights. *Mic drop*

Last Saturday, a group of students participated in the latest Teen Writer Workshop, hosted by the Laura (Riding) Jackson Foundation (LRJF). The session featured Shawn Welcome, Poet Laureate of Orlando, who led an inspiring spoken word poetry workshop for high schoolers from across the area.
Thanks to their participation, several of our students are now eligible for the prestigious Teen Writer Fellow award, an honor granted to those who attend at least three workshops and submit a body of work from one of them to LRJF. This nationally recognized award celebrates students’ dedication to the craft of creative writing.

Mrs. Wengler inspired me in more ways than one. She encouraged me to start writing my membean stories and took the time to read every one of them. She was also a great homeroom teacher, and I still remember the superlatives she gave each of us. Without her I wouldn’t be where I am today.

Be present - you're at school, you're not somewhere else. You're at school, so stay focused and enjoy the time you have with your friends in the moment. Take it all in and make the most of this wonderful opportunity you have because it'll go away pretty quickly.
A local mom from the VBHS community shared a very kind Facebook comment under Nicky Colontrelle's Senior Spotlight, and we couldn’t be more proud:
"My son plays for VBHS lax and the steds lax crew was at our home game cheering and having fun, and when this huge group of kids got up to leave there was some trash left behind, and one young man picked it all up to throw out before he left the area. I was so impressed and happy to see someone care. I went up to him to thank him and show my appreciation for what he did, and it was this young man. What a great example to all of us!🙌🏼"
Character, leadership and kindness. Nicky represents the best of what it means to be a Pirate!
All hands on deck: the PA T-Shirt Design Contest has officially set sail, and we’re calling all lower, middle and upper school students to show us what “Once a Pirate, Always a Pirate” means to you.
To stay on course, your design must follow a few important guidelines. First, your artwork should reflect the theme “Once a Pirate, Always a Pirate” and must fit within an 8.5" x 11" space. You may use no more than two colors and two fonts in your design. Limit any wording on top of a graphic, and be sure your creation is free of any offensive language or imagery. Most importantly, your design must be 100% original, no copyrighted images or logos allowed.
All designs must be submitted to pa@steds.org by May 12. One lower school winner and one middle/upper school winner will be revealed at the picnic before the Spring Game on May 22, where your design could become the next PA tee. Let's see that Pirate Pride!
This afternoon, nine seniors, plus one in absentia, were inducted into the Saint Edward’s School Chapter of the Cum Laude Society. This prestigious society honors academic excellence in secondary schools and upholds the values of excellence (Areté), justice (Diké) and honor (Timé). The ceremony began with a warm welcome from the chapter’s secretary, Academic Dean and Co-Director of College Counseling Mrs. Sternberg, followed by an inspiring keynote address by Faithful Leadership teacher and Saint Edward’s alumna, Mrs. Tori Barnett ’00.
Afterward, Augie Barreirinhas, Noah Hernandez, Addison Logemann, Sienna Mallon, Max Plotkin, Conor Powell (in absentia), Sommer Soderman, Grace Starr Griffeth, Ava Steinfurth and Jay Sullivan were officially welcomed into the society by the chapter's president, Upper School Dean Mrs. Padgett, and celebrated for their exceptional academic achievements. To close the ceremony, inductees Augie, Grace and Addison performed a beautiful rendition of Sky Full of Stars by Coldplay, and Father Barrett offered a heartfelt benediction.
Please click here for an album of photos, and click here to rewatch the ceremony. Please note that the volume is low, so you may need to turn it up to hear clearly.

Dr. Dunn is happy to announce that the Associate Head of Lower School has been confirmed. Lyndsey Samberg is an accomplished educator and leader with a deep commitment to improving educational outcomes and fostering community development. With over 15 years of experience in the field of education, she brings a wealth of knowledge in organizational management, learning systems and result-driven processes. She was named District Teacher of the Year and was one of five finalists for State Teacher of the Year for Florida out of more than 67,000 educators.
Dr. Dunn says, “Mrs. Samberg was a stand-out candidate for a number of reasons, but the most compelling was her commitment to evolving innovation in education. She has an innate motivation for a culture of constant improvement, which will deeply benefit our lower school students.”
Monday, April 7, was the inaugural Vero in Bloom Hat Luncheon at McKee Botanical Gardens. A group of US boys were involved in the organization and set up, plus served as greeters and escorted ladies down the green carpet. They also had to help in many other roles, including keeping track of the paddle raise — who was donating what to this new initiative. This organization was founded last year and is called The Green Heart Tribe. It’s modeled after the legendary New York City hat luncheon that happens in Central Park each spring.
The Parents Association is gearing up to celebrate our amazing faculty and staff during Teacher & Staff Appreciation Week, starting this Monday, and they still need some help to make it extra special! Please consider signing up to volunteer or contribute items using the links below.
Our teachers and staff members look forward to this week all year, and with your help, we can show them just how much they’re appreciated. Thank you for your support!

Looks like the future of Pirate baseball is in good hands! A big shoutout to the Vero Beach Little League crew who came out to cheer on the varsity team at their final game of the season. The stands were filled with young SES students, friends and family, bringing nonstop energy and school spirit. Talk about growing up on one campus! Coach Gray Ange shared his appreciation, saying, “Thank you to Vero Beach Little League Baseball for sending these lil’ studs out to support the 🏴☠️ last night. Their relentless energy and heckling 😀 made a difference. The future is bright!!”
Next week, April 14 - 17, the Upper School will be conducting a “no cell phone” experiment as part of the advocacy program to encourage awareness around phone usage and its impact on productivity, social interaction and well-being. Students will turn in their phones each morning for secure storage and retrieve them at the end of the day. We have planned around potential hiccups, with solutions for lunch cards, schedules, communication and even added some fun alternatives like board games and open gym time. If your child has a medical or extraordinary need to keep their phone, please reach out to Ms. Mangieri or Mrs. Padgett. We appreciate your support in making this a thoughtful and educational experience for our students.

AP Spanish students had an amazing time immersing themselves in Miami’s rich Cuban and artistic scenes! They kicked things off with a walking food tour in La Pequeña Havana, where they tasted authentic Cuban dishes like sándwich cubano, empanadas and pastelitos de guayaba. They strolled through the lively streets, sipped on coconut juice, learned about Cuban immigration history and even visited a traditional cigar factory. A memorable moment was stopping by Domino Park, where they watched locals engage in intense games of dominoes, a cherished tradition in the Cuban community.
Next, they headed to Wynwood Walls, home to Miami’s most vibrant street art. Surrounded by colorful murals, students learned about graffiti as a powerful form of social expression—tying it back to their class reading "Es Posible Soñar." They even got to channel their inner graffitero by creating their own street art!
Chaperones Profe Mejia and Sra. Rojas were beyond proud of the students for embracing new experiences, stepping out of their comfort zones, and keeping their conversations in español. This hands-on learning adventure not only strengthened their language skills but also deepened their appreciation for diverse cultures. ¡Qué chévere!
Saint Edward's School's first Coffeehouse and AP Art Reception was a success! SES hosted Coffeehouse I: Brews, Views and Tunes on Friday, March 28, in the Peter B. Many thanks to Mrs. Cooksey, Mr. Baker & his tech crew, Rossy Harper and Chef Mendez! Many thanks to Eric Faro for his Coffeehouse Video. Please see more student work on the slideshow.
Ms. Esposito's US choir class was honored to welcome Dr. Jacob Craig, Director of Music and Arts at First Presbyterian Church of Vero Beach, as a guest to their class last Friday. With extensive experience in choral conducting and performance, Dr. Craig brought his expertise to a dynamic workshop on the song Ride On King Jesus. He worked closely with students on vocal placement, tone and song interpretation, offering insightful feedback and guidance that deepened their understanding and elevated their performance.
On Saturday, February 1, a group of Saint Edward’s students and local Scouts, with their adult leaders, gathered on campus to complete an Eagle Scout project. Led by junior Matthew Barrett, a member of Troop 567 (meets at Our Savior Lutheran Church here in Vero Beach), the group undertook a two-part project to benefit the school campus. Please click the read more button at the end of the article to learn more about each part of the project.
The culmination of some five to six years of participation in Scouting, Eagle projects teach Scouts to serve their community, to plan the steps needed to carry out an impactful project, to raise funds and to demonstrate leadership in the execution of the plans. Matthew thanks the School for entrusting him with this project and for their guidance in carrying it out. He gives particular thanks to Mrs. Brandy Nelson, Mr. Jack MacMullan, Mr. Will Stribling, Mrs. Kathy Savage and Mrs. Linda Colontrelle, Michael’s aunt, along with those who joined in on the work day!
Show your team spirit for March Madness on Monday, April 7. All students (and staff) are invited to wear their favorite basketball jerseys or team t-shirts with their regular uniform bottoms. If you're rocking a sleeveless jersey, be sure to wear a t-shirt underneath. Let’s bring the energy and celebrate the madness together!
Every spring, students in the junior class are tasked with writing and delivering a humorous speech, and the Class of 2026 delivered the laughs this year. The pressure increases incrementally, as the semi-finalists compete in Mrs. Barnes's standing room only classroom. Once the three finalists are announced, the audience and the venue grow even larger. This week, Findlay Beckwith lamented her (inaccurate) status as a Native American, Wyatt Burdick celebrated a notable family trait, and Matthew Barrett provided some insight into what it's like to be a "PK." Want to learn more? Set aside about 10 minutes of time to watch their videos, and prepare for belly laughs. These students brought the heat, and the winner will be announced next week. Congratulations, Wyatt, Findlay and Matthew, on a job very well done!
As part of the second Distinguished Speaker Series, Ryan Manion, President of the Travis Manion Foundation, visited campus on Thursday for an inspiring lunchtime talk. Hosted by juniors Nick Weise and Seb Hall, the event centered around themes of servant leadership, resilience and the power of community.
Ryan shared the moving story of her brother, Marine Corps 1stLt Travis Manion, who gave the ultimate sacrifice on April 29, 2007, during his second deployment to Iraq. While leading a patrol in Fallujah, Travis and his team were ambushed. In an act of heroism, he led a counterattack that drew enemy fire away from his wounded comrades, ultimately saving every member of his patrol. For his bravery, he was posthumously awarded the Silver Star and Bronze Star with Valor. Ryan recounted how the Travis Manion Foundation was born from this legacy, and she encouraged students to live with purpose, guided by her brother's powerful motto: “If Not Me, Then Who?”

Students processed their native hard clams Mercenaria mercenaria as part of their class projects in collaboration with the Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute of FAU. Students started the clams as small juvenile 'seed' from the research hatchery early in the year and raised them in our flow-through aquaculture system for marine science at the lagoon dock (click on the links to see their growth). The students studied mollusk biology, water quality requirements, aquatic animal health and nutrition, and temporal growth. Students moved the clams to another aquaculture facility, where they will complete their final growth stages and reach harvest size.

Coastal Connections visited marine science classes to sort marine debris for recycling and discuss the proper disposal of fishing gear. Wildlife entanglements and deaths due to discarded fishing gear are increasing rapidly, and this fishing debris represents over half of our oceanic plastic waste! Our students are part of the solution by consistently removing this debris from our community and educating others to fish responsibly. Coastal Connections has fishing line tubes in 40+ locations within Indian River County to collect and recycle fishing line and ensure it doesn't end up wrapped around or ingested by our dolphins, manatees, birds, turtles and other marine wildlife.

On Saturday February 1, a group of St. Edward’s students and local Scouts with their adult leaders gathered on campus to complete an Eagle Scout project. Led by junior student, Matthew Barrett, a member of Troop 567, the group undertook a two part project to benefit the school campus.
Part one was to construct three benches to be positioned along a footpath by the lagoon. The benches will be used for the outdoor classrooms of Marine Biology teacher Brandy Nelson as well as anyone in our community who would like to sit and enjoy the beauty of our campus.
Part two was to refurbish the memorial garden between the Benedict Library and the Waxlax Auditorium. The team took down a weathered bamboo curtain and replaced it with two white, vinyl fence panels. This effort was part of a larger undertaking to restore the garden, built in memory of Michael Trevino-Aversa from the class of 2003, who lost his life two days after his graduation. The memorial garden, will be rededicated with Michael’s family present early in May. A separate article will be posted then as a way of remembering Michael, who considered Saint. Edward’s School his home.

On Friday, January 31, the choral students in grades 7 -12 got to go to Disney’s Workshop B. They were there for two hours and were taught the songs Love is an Open Door and For the First Time in Forever from the Disney movie Frozen. Then, they spent the rest of the day at Magic Kingdom, riding fun rides like Tron, Space Mountain and many others. They then celebrated the end of a long day with dinner at Chick-fil-A and McDonald's. They had so much fun, all thanks to their choir teacher, Ms. Esposito.

Preparing for the audition took dedication, from practicing sight-singing and musicianship tests to mastering vocal pieces with baritone tracks. Did you know the stomach bug virus is resistant to hand sanitizers? That’s why good old-fashioned handwashing with soap and water for at least 20 seconds is the best way to keep germs away! Pro tip: use paper towels instead of shared hand towels to avoid spreading germs. For cleaning surfaces, the CDC recommends a bleach solution (1/3 cup bleach per gallon of water) to tackle those pesky germs that can stick around for up to two weeks. Wipe down high-touch areas like doorknobs, light switches and faucets, and let the solution air dry. Got laundry to tackle? Use hot water, detergent and the longest wash cycle, then dry on high heat. It’s the best way to keep everything fresh and germ-free.
If the stomach bug does strike, rest and hydration are your best friends. Students can return to school 24 hours after being vomit, diarrhea and fever-free without medication. Friendly reminder: encourage kids to avoid sharing drinks, utensils or food with friends; it’s an easy way to keep everyone healthy. For questions or extra tips, Nurse DeCosta is here to help!
