Sixth Grade Students Experience Blindness in Empathy Lesson

Sixth-grade English students are reading the novel The Cay, in which one of the protagonists goes blind. To build empathy for the situation in which this character finds himself, students participated in a series of blindness simulation activities in which they were required to complete certain tasks. Afterward, they shared how their blindness experience left them feeling vulnerable, helpless, anxious, and disoriented. One student added that the temporary blindness made him appreciate his ability to see. [please click on the headline for more photos.]
