Scooby Snacks ~ A Membean Story

Ava Steinfurth (8) wrote the following story as part of her Membean vocabulary test.

I pushed the cart passed my brother and he darted after it. Colton reached to try to yank  the cart away from me, but his attempt was fruitless. All of a sudden, Preston turned into the  aisle with another cart. Colton ran down the aisle, pushed Preston away, and commandeered the  cart. Colton had finally achieved possession of a cart. We stared at each other, until our eyes  burned. Finally, Colton began to speed down the aisle. I followed suit and pushed my cart  towards him. Our carts were about to collide, when our mom found our standoff. “What are you guys doing?!”
We both pulled our carts to a halt, just inches before a head-to-head collision occurred. “Umm…”
“We were…”
“Save it for the car. Let’s just get in and out. We are supposed to be getting extra food for  your cousins. They are coming down tonight, so we have to hurry.”

She walked over to my cart, and found that it contained a cornucopia, of dingdongs,  hohos, cosmic brownies, and fruit roll ups.
“What is this? Go put this back where you got it and come with me. I have a list of all of  the things we need.”
I stacked the items back onto the shelves, and then I saw them. There were glorious  scooby snacks on the top shelf. I jumped in the air, but I couldn’t reach them. I climbed into the
cart, reached up, and pulled down the scooby snacks. I threw them into the cart and ran after my  mom.
At the checkout line, I placed them onto the conveyor belt as silently as I could. My mom  turned her gaze toward them, and I decided not to take any chances. I threw a bag of broccoli on  top of them, just before she looked in that direction.
“Whoa, what did that broccoli ever do to you? Wait, where is Colton?”
Colton came running into the checkout line, carrying twelve pool noodles, and a giant  pizza raft.
“Mom! Mom! Look what I found!”
“Colton, you can get one pool noodle, and the raft, but not the other pool noodles.” “Ten pool noodles and a raft.”
“Two pool noodles and a raft.”
“Seven and a raft.”
“Six and no raft.”
“Four and a raft.”
“Fine.”
We all jumped into the car, with Colton’s pool noodles barricading everyone in. His pizza  raft was squished between my feet and the floor.
When we got home, I snuck the scooby snacks inside. I knew that if the boys found them,  they would eat them all, so I opened a box of granola, emptied it out, and poured my scooby  snacks in.
To my surprise, when I turned around, Colton snatched the scooby snack box and ran  toward my mom.
“Mom! Mom! Ava…”
I slapped my hand over his mouth.
“I will let you have some if you promise not to tell. Well, you have to give some to  Preston too.”
“Fine.”
I brought the granola box into my room, with Preston and Colton trailing behind me. I  dumped them onto the floor, and evenly distributed them between the three of us. Colton tore into a bag of them and devoured them all within seconds. Preston ate two  bags, and then I ate one. I looked away from my bag of scooby snacks, and saw that Colton had  already eaten five bags, and Preston three. I decided to finish up the last two bags of scooby  snacks. I ate them, and they were amazing. I finished the last bag and looked up. Colton’s mouth  was covered in rainbow goo, and Preston’s tongue was dyed rainbow. Colton stood up and then  fell onto the floor.
“Colton? Colton? Are you all right? Colton?”
“Preston, is Colton still breathing? Preston?”
I turned around, and found Preston lying on the ground by my bed. I started to yell for my  mom but stopped.
Everything began to spiral, and all of a sudden, I was falling towards the ground. I saw  my cheek squish down and then bounce back up like a ball of slime. Then everything went  black.
My eyes blinked open, and I found myself in the air. I fell through a cloud and got a  mouthful of gnats.
“Spp! Spp! Eww!
I realized that I had temporarily forgotten about the fact that I was FALLING OUT OF  THE SKY!!!
My stomach was going nuts. It felt like I was on a rollercoaster that never stopped going  downhill. I flailed my arms aimlessly through the air, and screamed, a lot. After I had fallen through several clouds, I saw where I was about to land. Under me was  a huge body of water. The water was crystal clear, but that didn’t stop the fact that hundreds of  species of lethal animals could be living in there. I grabbed at the air, as much as I could, even  though I knew that there were no invisible handles anywhere nearby. I was only a few dozen  yards away from the water, so I decided to curl up in a ball. However, it was quite a struggle. My  arms and legs felt like they were being pulled by an invisible force, so I was only able to pull  them in a few inches.
I bashed into the water, but it didn’t hurt much at all. My body sank to the bottom of the  body of water. I kicked the sand and shot up to the surface. As I took a breath, a small wave  splashed into my mouth.
“Well, I guess I’m in the ocean.”
The water was really salty, so it made me realize that I was actually pretty thirsty from  falling through the air for several minutes.
I could see an island not too far away, so I decided to swim towards that.
My arms and legs were numb, as I walked onto the shore. I laid in the sand, until I was  reminded of my thirst again. I stood up, my legs and arms now feeling better, and I searched the  island for some water. Most of the trees on the island had coconuts on them, so that was one  source of water. However almost all of them were way taller than me. I kept walking, until I  heard the sound of water splashing. I ran towards the water, as fast as I could.
Finally, I found it. I bent down and cupped the water from the huge stream, into my  mouth.
A ululation arose from the jungle. I spun around in search of a person. In the bushes, was  a boy covered in mud. He stood up holding a long stick and began to approach me. I started to  close my eyes, but then realized that I knew him.
“Preston?!”
“Uhh, Colton it’s only Ava.”
Colton, wearing even more mud than Preston, also carrying a stick, slowly walked out of  the jungle.
“You guys look disgusting.”
“Ehh, we look amazing.”
They high fived each other.
“Wait, why are we all here.”
“We fell out of the sky.”
“Yeah.”
“Colton fell into the water before me, but I could see him as I was falling.” “But why are you covered in mud?”
“We decided if we were going to live on an island, we might as well use it to our  advantage.”
“Well, if we are going to be stuck on this island then, we at least need some food and  water.”
“Yeah, well, we already thought of that, Ava.”
“We will just eat all these coconuts, and drink from this stream.”
“Ok, but how are we going to get the coconuts.”
We all walked to the nearest coconut tree and stood around thinking. Finally, Preston  broke the silence.
“I have an idea! Let’s have one person try to climb up, and then have them throw the  coconuts to the others who will break them open.”
We proceeded to use Preston’s plan to get us food.
After a test of who was the strongest, we agreed that Preston should be the one to climb  up the tree.
Preston jumped onto the tree and began to climb, using any holes and bumps in the tree  as steps. When he got to the top, he pulled on a bundle of coconuts, and they came falling to the  ground. Colton and I started to throw them at other trees, to break them open. Preston threw  down another bundle, and then scooted back down the tree.
We opened all of the coconuts in the first bundle, within a few minutes, but we decided to  leave the second bundle uncracked so that they would stay fresh longer.
We dug into the coconuts, sucked up the water first, then began tearing off as much white  flesh as we could. Colton ate two coconuts, I ate one and a half, and Preston ate one and a half. We dove into the stream and started to swim around. I continued to tread on the surface,  when my foot bashed into something.
“Oww!”
“What is it?”
“My foot hit something.”
Colton dove under the water, and Preston followed.
They came up shouting.
“Oh..! My... !”
“Gosh!!”
“What?”
“We are going to be rich!!”
“Why?”
“It’s a treasure chest.”
We all jumped into the air.
We swam under the water and each grabbed a part of the treasure chest. We hoisted it out  of the water and onto the sand.
As we were pondering how to get the lock open, Preston erratically kicked the lock.  Due to how long it had been in the water, I guess that the lock had just decayed. We jumped up  and pulled the chest open. To our surprise, however, there was no treasure inside. The chest was  filled with scooby snacks.
All of a sudden, Colton fell face first into the ground, and Preston followed. The ground  started to spin, and everything went black.
“Ava? Ava?”
I blinked open my eyes and saw that I was in my bedroom. Preston and Colton were  shaking me awake. I sat up and leaned against my bed.
“Did you dream that too?”
“When we were on the island?”
“Yeah.”
“Did we all dream of it?”
“Yeah.”
“Yeah.”
We all looked down at the floor, at the scooby snack wrappers.
I picked up the box and looked at the back of it.
“Scooby Snack Sleeping Pills, they put you to sleep within ten minutes. Just eat one  pack.”
“Warning: Eating more than one may cause serious hallucinations, and may lead  to a coma, if too much is ingested.”
