Grade 5: Digestive System Simulation Model

Kelly Hudson
Fifth-grade students are learning about the digestive system. After making a 3-D model out of recycled materials, students participated in a simulation to learn how the digestive system works. Students crushed crackers to simulate our teeth crushing food, adding water to the crackers to stimulate saliva, and pushed the food down the esophagus to represent the muscles in the esophagus. Once the food was in the stomach, they added drops of vinegar to the mushed crackers to represent acids in the stomach. They pushed the food through the intestines, rectum, and anus. Click on this link to see this engaging lesson in action. Crackers are never the same after this activity. ??
