Patriotic Pirates: National Anthem Project Day at the LS
On September 13 the Lower School came together in the courtyard to practice patriotic pride and singing skills as they sang the national anthem along with other traditional patriotic tunes. They also learned about the history of 'the broad stripes and bright stars' that make up our nation's symbol. LS music teacher Marcy Sharman coordinated the event as part of the National Anthem Project, a program launched in 2005 and participated in by music educators across the nation.
From the Smithsonian: On September 14, 1814, U.S. soldiers at Baltimore’s Fort McHenry raised a huge American flag to celebrate a crucial victory over British forces during the War of 1812. The sight of those “broad stripes and bright stars” inspired Francis Scott Key to write a song that eventually became the United States national anthem.
