The Board of Trustees met on campus yesterday morning. The April meeting is one of five meetings held each academic year. There are six committees of the Board and each Trustee is asked to serve on at least two committees. The committees meet anywhere from three times to seven times a year. Yesterday, this group of volunteers assembled for three hours and covered a great deal of information. The meeting started with a blessing from Fr. Barrett, who prayed for Saint Edward’s School. He also prayed for the Board and for members of our community who are in need of help.
Mrs. Wendy Porter is our Board Chair; she called the meeting to order and asked me to present my Head of School report. It is my chance to brief the Board on all of the happenings at Saint Edward’s, the status of our new strategic plan, and Independent School trends around the country.
Mr. Rick McDermott, who chairs our Investment Committee, briefed the Board on the quarterly results of our endowment, as well as the company that manages the retirement accounts of all faculty and staff.
We then heard from Mr. John Huryn, who chairs our Buildings and Grounds Committee. He briefed the Board by giving a general campus update, results of annual inspections, campus master plan updates, and the update on the pool project.
The next report came from Mr. Darren Sylvia, who chairs the Finance Committee. He reviewed the financial results of the school budget, our property insurance coverages, and premium costs.
Mr. Andrew Russell chairs the Mission and Education Committee. This committee oversees the strategic plan and for this meeting, invited Mrs. Sternberg, who informed the Board of the success of the Class of 2023 and their college placement. We also discussed the Jolly Roger Adventures summer program and our summer stipend program for our faculty.
Mr. Adam Logemann chairs the Advancement Committee. He briefed the Board on the results of the Pirate Ball, the Annual Fund, alum outreach, and our marketing and admissions results to date.
Finally, the Governance Committee, which Mr. Romàn Ortega-Cowan chairs, presented the slate of new Trustees who would serve on the Board beginning in the 2023-2024 academic year. This committee also presented the names of those who would serve on the Board as officers. The committee finally reviewed the Governance documents, which guide the Board operationally.
The term “Trustee” means to hold the school in trust. This group of dedicated volunteers cares deeply about the future of Saint Edward’s. I am proud of the work they do to ensure that we are living our mission, taking care of our faculty and staff, and caring for our students and their families. They spend countless hours over the course of each year in their already busy lives because they love this place, and I know you share in my sincere thanks to all of them!
I look forward to seeing you around campus!
