Shaun Hurley Awarded Apple

Congratulations to Math Department Chair Shaun Hurley, who was recently honored as an Apple Distinguished Educator. The road to this recognition was not easy. He submitted a 2-minute video that addressed three areas questions.
  • Share how you have transformed your learning environment to engage learners. How have the Apple products you have access to uniquely helped you achieve your learning goals?
  • Share data or new learnings that provide evidence of the impact you are making. Are there examples of student work or innovative strategies that you can highlight?
  • Share examples of how you have extended the reach of your professional work beyond your own classroom, campus, or community to empower other educators. Are there presentations, published content, or interactions in social media that show your leadership outside of the classroom?
In the video, he talked about how he transformed his classroom into an active learning environment by getting rid of the traditional desks and replacing them with tables and lining the walls with whiteboards for students to use, as well as his (sometimes) flipped classroom format. He talked about some different projects implemented with students in the past, including building model roller coasters using iPods as the train, utilizing the built-in accelerometer to measure the forces a rider would experience; student-generated iBooks; iPhones as student-response systems; and highlighted a few iOS apps that students have developed. He also talked about the Slack team and Facebook group I created to support other iOS App Development teachers, and my experience presenting at FETC this and last year, as well my upcoming presentation, which will be at ISTE in Philly this summer.

While Mr. Hurley was doing all of this, he has been preparing to defend his doctoral dissertation in late spring or early summer. Soon we'll all be calling him Dr. Hurley!
