The Kenya Tutoring Program is Back!

KL (lk)
Mr. Leonhardt happily announced this week that the Kenya Tutoring Program has been launched for the 2020-2021 school year. Mr. Leonhardt took over as the Program Mentor, and the team is led by senior Cristina Pines and junior Amira Hussamy, who have established a system to make sure we have someone in line to take over as the seniors graduate. This way, the program will always be in the capable hands of a dependable student leader.
This year they have switched from the tutoring being held via Skype to Google Meet, which means any potential campus interruptions will not stop the tutoring program. Our volunteers are truly dedicated to this very meaningful project. Cristina says, “This club means the world to me, and it is so incredible to see the tremendous amount of interest of our SES students wanting to participate and make a difference. Especially now that our friends in Kenya are growing from two to six computers, I hope it encourages even more students to find ways to join, and we'll continue to grow. I love every minute of it - the kids, their smiles, the happiness when they get the right answer.”

Amira continues, “One of the things that made me want to obtain a leadership role in Kenya Tutoring was knowing that I could better a child's education each week. I wanted to be involved as much as possible because I truly believe in the program and its goals. There aren't many ways that we can directly help people who live whole oceans away from us, but we have managed to help make a difference nonetheless. I also love seeing the kids each week and spending time with them because they are so intelligent and kind-hearted.” In addition to the tutoring program, SES also sponsors three girls for whom high school would have been an unattainable dream.
