Father Barrett Enlightens Seventh Grade English Class

(lk)
While reading The Old Man and the Sea, seventh grade English students reflected on Ernest Hemingway's pioneering writing style and, in particular, his "Iceberg Theory." They learned how, rather than overtly describing the protagonists' emotions, Hemingway used figurative language, including biblical allusions, to create powerful images in the readers' minds. We were so lucky that we were able to have Father Barrett come into class to teach us about the biblical allusions in The Old Man and the Sea and point out the multi-layered connections between Christian stories and events and symbolism in the novella. Thank you for sharing your theological insights, Father Barrett!
