MS Students May Now Apply to Tutor Students in Kenya

(lk)
This year we are opening up the Kenya Mentoring/Tutoring Program to eighth graders to allow them to assist and gain experience with upper school students who have been involved in the program for up to four years. The program is currently offered as an upper school club governed by elected students, with Mr. Leonhardt as the staff coordinator. Cristina Pines and Amira Hussamy are the current presidents and will introduce volunteers to the program prior to their taking on the role of assistants.

Students in ninth grade and higher will receive community service hours for all of the time you put into your volunteer work. The mentors/tutors work with students, typically in grades 5-8, who attend Phildan School in Kenya. The meetings take place in the annex from 7-8 a.m. and students usually sign up for one hour-long session per week. They receive a Google Meet link that will only work for the shift they have signed up for on their set day of the week. In other words, if you sign up for Monday you would mentor every Monday using the same link. Students who sign up for assisting in 8th grade will easily be able to transition into becoming an official mentor in 9th grade. Depending on how many volunteers take part each year, you may be working together with a partner mentoring the same student in Kenya.

Students must have a signature from a parent and also their advisor to apply. More information will be available from eighth grade advisors in the near future.
