The Season of Thanks - Have You Thanked Your Teacher?

An opinion piece in the Wall Street Journal, titled Thank Your Teachers Before It's Too Late (November 21, 2023), opens with a description of an episode from 1962 of the Twilight Zone in which a teacher is forced to retire after 51 years in the classroom. The teacher laments that they had made no difference in the lives of their students. The bell rings, and the teacher is called back into the classroom, where he meets the ghosts of former students who died heroically and who had returned to thank him for teaching them about patriotism, loyalty, courage, ethics and honesty. It is then he is finally able to retire in peace.

The author goes on to describe a teacher who impacted his life, and he ultimately is able to connect with this former instructor and thank him for giving him the confidence to write.

A teacher is not merely an instructor but a mentor, guide and nurturer rolled into one. They have the power to inspire, ignite passions and unlock potentials that may have otherwise remained dormant. The impact of a teacher extends far beyond the confines of the classroom, leaving an indelible mark on a child's journey through life. As we celebrate the season of thanks, let us remember to honor and appreciate the tireless dedication of the individuals who shape the future, one lesson and one child at a time.

For me, I have several: Mrs. Sargent and Mr. Olmstead in elementary school. In middle school, it was Mr. Fass, and in high school, it was Mr. Korson and Mr. Ruhlman. I have had the opportunity to thank them all. I don't remember a particular lesson they taught me in class, but I do remember how they made me feel. They always believed in me and encouraged me to challenge myself. For this, I will always be grateful.

I look forward to seeing you around campus!
