Varsity Girls Basketball Brings Home SSAA Championship Trophy

The varsity girls basketball recently traveled to AdventHealth Fieldhouse & Conference Center in Winter Haven to compete in the SSAA 1A Championship Tournament. The Pirates first competed in the 1A Playoffs against Lakeside Christian School on 1/19/24. Working well as a team both offensively and defensively, the Pirates dominated the courts against the Lions 43-20 to secure their bid for the championship. 

Eighth-grader Avonti Jennings led the Pirates on the court, collecting many rebounds and putting up 12 points. Teammates Dhanika Perez and Gaby Collazo netted 10 points each in the victory. Chase Nelson sank 6 points, Caitlin Moscrip recorded 4, and Sommer Soderman added 1 point for the Pirate team.

The Pirate team faced off against First Academy of Leesburg in the 1A Championship on 1/20/24. Collazo led the Pirates to a strong 1st quarter, with the Pirates maintaining a 7-point lead. The 2nd quarter saw the Eagles scoreless as the Pirates successfully pushed forward. Maintaining a 23-14 lead going into the 4th quarter, the determined Pirates played fast and strong, scoring 16 more points and holding their opponents scoreless yet again. The Pirates ensured the championship victory with their 39-14 win.

Collazo led the scoreboard with 18 points. Nelson put up 8 points for the Pirates. Moscrip scored 4 points, and Perez chipped in 3. Tirzah Boulding, Meagan Baker, and Soderman all claimed 2 points apiece in the victory.
