Innovations

The Middle School English and History Departments teamed up and redesigned the RWT (Research, Writing & Technology) course, with the aim to prepare students for the signature History project in the late spring. This project, Night of the Notables, focuses on an event or invention of the 20th century, presented through the eyes of the inventor or a person who was significantly affected by the event/invention. The students are led through the brainstorming process for the particular event/invention they choose and then instructed on how best to gather resources in our library. Everyone in the class is required to visit the School's writing lab twice during the process and incorporate the suggestions provided by the Upper School English teachers who work with them. Peer editing also takes place. Toward the end of the quarter students work on a presentation that must incorporate technology. Whether they create a video, PowerPoint, Prezi, VoiceThread, or something else, RWT students bring the historical significance of their event or invention to life in a one-minute presentation.

Recent RWT topics include: the invention of the microwave oven, the sinking of the Titanic, the discovery of penicillin, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "I Have A Dream" speech, the Manhattan Project, the Space Shuttle Challenger explosion, the invention of the barcode, the invention of the Apache weapons systems, the invention of the Polaroid camera, and the creation of the United Nations.

  • Q. What are Senior Buddies?

The Senior Buddies program is a long-standing school tradition that began in 1995 when Diane Cooper joined SES as Head of School. In the fall each senior is paired with a first-grade buddy. They are introduced in the fall and a variety of Senior Buddies events are planned throughout the year. At the end of the school year, the first-grade buddies share sage 'college advice' with their seniors. A booklet with these personalized messages is given to each senior at the final Senior Buddies gathering.

    Senior Buddies Events:
September: Meet & Greet: First Graders meet their Senior Buddies
    October: Halloween Parade (parents invited)
December: Christmas Celebration & Card Exchange
    January: Reading Day
    February: Valentine Card Exchange
March/April: Easter Egg Hunt (parents invited)
    May: Goodbye Luncheon
  • Q. What is Senior Commissioning?

The Senior Commissioning ceremony is held at the beginning of the school year and sets the foundation for seniors in relation to leadership, role modeling, and expectations throughout the school year. Parents are welcome to attend.
  • Q. What is ABC Day?

ABC (Anything But Cars) Day usually takes place on the last day of classes for seniors. Members of the senior class travel to school using any mode of transportation other than a car. Parents are welcome and encouraged to attend.
  • Q. What is Senior Walk?

Senior Walk is the event that culminates the academic year for seniors, and it begins with a special presentation and Senior Memories video (parents are asked to send in photos for this video) and concludes with a last walk through the hallways. Parents are welcome to attend.

  • Middle School Innovations

Eighth grade students have the opportunity to investigate their own lives, reflect on past experiences, consider future experiences and prepare themselves with techniques for managing life in the near future in the new wheel course, Discoveries. Designed by Middle School Dean of Students, Krissie Fojtik, the course allows the oldest Middle School students to learn more about themselves and the world around them in preparation for the upcoming years in high school and college. It is both reflective and investigative in nature and includes class assignments, projects, discussion and journal writing.
